I will always love the colors and architecture of the buildings in Downtown Charleston.
When I was growing up, I was obsessed with the Mandie books by Lois Gladys Leppard. Mandie traveled to Charleston on several occasions throughout the books, and it made the city sound enchanting. When she was old enough, my sister read the same books, so it was fun to finally be able to show her the city we both read so much about as children. Until this trip, we would just laugh when we texted or saw each other in California about how funny and strange the world is, that I live in Charleston now. A place that previously had been so far away and mysterious to us when we were children.
(My favorite part of Michael's and my journey to Charleston story is that he never realized how badly I'd wanted to visit Charleston, but surprised me by bringing me here on our honeymoon. This city was just meant to be for me.)
The day my family spent in Charleston together was gloriously brisk, but thankfully not freezing. (Because my mom, sister, and I would have died otherwise. haha. We're not made for the cold.) After starting our day off at one of our many visits to Black Tap for coffee, Michael and I enjoyed being able to take them through the Charleston City Market (where we discovered our love for diffuser necklaces.) to some of our favorite galleries (check out Robert Lange Studios if you're ever in town!), and then topping it off with some amazing gluten free brownies from Bakehouse and dinner.
I love days and locations like this because it was easy to pack something in for everyone without exhausting ourselves by driving around to a million locations. While there might not be as many options for young children (though there are a few) a diverse group of teenagers and/or adults should be quite content for multiple days of exploring. (Particularly if they like delicious food!) Yet another reason why I adore this city!
What is a place that's really special to you? Have you ever visited a place after reading a ton about it as a child? What was that like for you? I'd love to know!
